Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) Design Project
HUKARI provides Engineering Services Support for Design of the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF). The MFFF is being designed and constructed to receive surplus nuclear material from obsolete weapons and convert it into commercial grade nuclear power plant fuel. In particular, HUKARI supports the Duke COGEMA Stone & Webster (DCS) Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) group, responsible for producing Nuclear Safety Evaluations (NSEs) and other documentation supporting the NRC license application for the MFFF. HUKARI’s scope of work specifically supports:
-
Design Review Input
-
Combined DOE/NRC Facility Licensing
-
Safety Analysis
-
Safety Basis Document Development
-
Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
HUKARI’s support has resulted in significant accomplishments in research and compilation of process systems and components shutdown from seismic events for the MFFF. FMEA support demonstrates that off-normal events potentially initiated by a single point (component) failure have been analyzed and prevented or mitigated to an acceptably low level of probability of occurrence or acceptably low severity of impact. HUKARI has focused this failure analysis on “items relied on for safety” (IROFS), which are components within process systems that must function in all normal and design basis off-normal events to ensure the safety of onsite workers and the general public offsite.
