How long have you been with HAI? Over 2 1/2 years now.

Tell us a little about your career journey. I got my start in Mechanical Design over 40 years ago, graduating from Johnson College in Scranton, PA. I started as a Jr Drafter detailing boiler tubing for Foster Wheeler. I hit the nuclear trail in 1982, which took me to 3 different nuclear projects, working as a field engineer in Cincinnati, OH; Syracuse, NY and Fort Worth, TX. In 1992, I took an opportunity that brought me and my wife Sharon to the Augusta, GA area, working for Jacobs Engineering at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, SC. Sharon and I started and raised our family here in the Augusta area. We have been blessed with 3 children. Corey, Ryan and Abigail. I have been working here at SRS over the last 30 years as a Sr Designer, Piping Group Lead, 3D Plant Designer and a Managing Designer, working for major engineering firms such as Jacobs, Raytheon, General Physics, Bechtel & CB&I.

What is your proudest career achievement? Making a contribution to the completion of 3 nuclear power facilities in our great country. On a personal note, Sharon and I are the proud parents of 2 BSA Eagle Scouts and our daughter Abby is a GSA Gold Award winner. All 3 of our children achieving the highest honor in Scouting.

Don Foti, a HukariAscendent, Inc. (Hukari) employee, serves on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 241 Code Committee.

Involvement of industry professionals fuels the development of national codes and creates the foundation of advancements in safety. Hukari encourages employees to participate in code development. Several Hukari employees are members of code development committees. Don Foti is currently serving on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration and Demolition Operations that addresses fire safety measures for buildings being modified.

Life Safety features (NFPA 101, Life Safety) for buildings being constructed or demolished are problematic as many building features are not yet present, (e.g., fire walls, permanent power, sprinkler protection). Before 2022, editions of NFPA 241 had vague direction on providing Life safety for workers.

Hukari, supporting the Code development process, introduced a simplified concept to provide life safety for workers. The concept focuses on the goals of protecting workers, not the physical components to provide such protection. The goals are quite direct. Workers need to know an emergency exists, have a path to gain safety, and be able to see the path. Simply stated,
•Know of the emergency,
•Have a path to safety, and
•See the path.

NFPA 241, 2022 directs the fire protection program manager for construction/demolition projects develop a plan for egress from a building. Common features include use of telephones and radios to alert workers. Air horns may also be used. A minimum of two escape routes are identified prior to work each day, as needed, to address changes in the building configuration, and lighting is provided. Flashlights and work limited to daylight hours are two methods commonly used.

The 2025 revision of NFPA 241 is now being written. Hukari personnel are developing clarifying information to aid fire protection program managers to develop the plan for egress. The information will be included in the 241 Appendix.

Cabel Breitenbach is an employee of HukariAscendent. He works as a Construction Engineer/Contract Technical Representative (CTR) at the OSWDF (On Site Waste Disposal Facility) at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, OH. He has worked on-site for 2 ½ years. Two years ago, he was given the opportunity to undertake the role of Safety Work Group Advocate at the OSWDF. The role of this position includes presenting monthly materials that target specific areas of safety and health, practices to improve in the workplace and at home, schedule and facilitate monthly Safety Work Group (SWG) meetings. He is responsible for recording meeting minutes and execute/assign action items for any safety issues that need to be resolved. In addition to his role as SWG Advocate, he attends Company Employee Safety Team (CEST) quarterly meetings with safety advocates throughout the plant site.

During his time as a SWG Advocate he has set a variety of goals to improve the safety and wellbeing of his fellow co-workers as well as the working environment. These goals include listening to any issues or concerns addressed in SWG meetings, diligently seeking a resolution to issues/concerns, presenting safety information in a way that sparks discussion and interaction among the attendees, and improving any unsafe work conditions found on the job site. Some of his accomplishments / improvements for a safer work environment have included; a damaged speed bump became a safety concern. He contacted the facility manager about the issue and working together with Northwind was able to procure and install a new speed bump. An automatic door was damaged which became a safety hazard when opening and closing. Cabel contacted the facility manager and with the cooperation of maintenance the issue was resolved.

Before Cabel took over the Safety Advocate role, attendance was running subpar for the SWG meetings; because he was able to make improvements, attendance now at the SWG meetings is in the ninety-fifth percentile. Cabel plans to continue acting as Safety Advocate for the OSWDF and keep making improvements at Ports to create a safer workplace for everyone.

HukariAscendent would like to thank and congratulate Cabel for his participation in the SWG Advocate program, a job well done. Always putting Safety First!

On September 2, 2001, Mr. Moon set out to achieve one of the hardest endurance feats in human history. The Transcontinental Run from San Francisco to New York City. This was a goal he set in previous years, and knew he had to set himself up for success. He sold his company in Atlanta, packed up everything he could fit into the bed of his truck, and set out to train at high altitude in Park City, UT. Living at 7,000 feet, with trails outside his doors step, he was able to get the proper training he needed for his body to run 3,127.6 miles. After one year of training at altitude, he took his RV, and headed West. Choosing when to leave for the run was critical. He picked September 2nd because that day is his grandfather’s birthday. Also, one does not want to leave too late in the year and get caught in winter storms on the East Coast.

Mr. Moon’s original goal was to break the World Record for the fastest time, which is 42 days. He was on pace until he crossed over the Sierra Nevada’s and entered the desert in Nevada. He developed tendonitis in his left leg which slowed down his pace, but he never took a single day off. He pushed through the pain. Mentally this hurt. He knew his goal was out of reach. He broke down. So much hard work, just to see the World Record slip through his fingertips. His crew lifted his spirits, and they continued on their journey. Never stopping, no matter what hardships presented themselves. He kept repeating his mantra in his head, “So Much Grit, I Will Never Quit.” He crossed the Sierra Nevada Mountains, ran at night through the desert of Nevada, made it over the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, hit the highest elevations of his run in Colorado, over Rabbit Ears Pass and Cameron Pass, ran through the Great Plains during Harvest Season, crossed the Mississippi River, and climbed over the Appalachian Mountains. He ran through rain, sleet, snow, tornado warnings, changed route due to wildfires, dodged semis, and nothing was going to stop him from reaching New York City. The goal was to finish on October 13, but everyday was a battle. He never knew how many miles he was going to log. He could only focus on one day at a time. That is how he persevered. Two weeks out from finishing, he saw that he could finish his run on Veterans Day, only if he ran 53 miles a day. On November 11, 2021, he crossed on the George Washington Bridge, and ran the last 13 miles to the steps of New York City Hall. He had made it! Being a U.S. Air Force veteran, this was an emotional day for him. A day he will never forget. 71 days after beginning his journey in California, he reached New York City. All the pain was worth it. 21,000 people have summited Everest, only 242 have ever ran across America. He would never have completed this journey without the love and support from everyone in his life. One cannot do hard things alone, one needs an amazing team to help one achieve those goals! He ended up breaking 3 World Records, which are currently pending with Guinness. Most consecutive Ultra Marathons, Most Ultras in a month, and Most Ultra Marathons in a year. 71 days, 3,127.6 miles, 14 pairs of shoes, one mission.

“Fortitudine Vincimus” – “By Endurance, We Conquer.”
