Don Foti, a HukariAscendent, Inc. (Hukari) employee, serves on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 241 Code Committee.

Involvement of industry professionals fuels the development of national codes and creates the foundation of advancements in safety. Hukari encourages employees to participate in code development. Several Hukari employees are members of code development committees. Don Foti is currently serving on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration and Demolition Operations that addresses fire safety measures for buildings being modified.

Life Safety features (NFPA 101, Life Safety) for buildings being constructed or demolished are problematic as many building features are not yet present, (e.g., fire walls, permanent power, sprinkler protection). Before 2022, editions of NFPA 241 had vague direction on providing Life safety for workers.

Hukari, supporting the Code development process, introduced a simplified concept to provide life safety for workers. The concept focuses on the goals of protecting workers, not the physical components to provide such protection. The goals are quite direct. Workers need to know an emergency exists, have a path to gain safety, and be able to see the path. Simply stated,
•Know of the emergency,
•Have a path to safety, and
•See the path.

NFPA 241, 2022 directs the fire protection program manager for construction/demolition projects develop a plan for egress from a building. Common features include use of telephones and radios to alert workers. Air horns may also be used. A minimum of two escape routes are identified prior to work each day, as needed, to address changes in the building configuration, and lighting is provided. Flashlights and work limited to daylight hours are two methods commonly used.

The 2025 revision of NFPA 241 is now being written. Hukari personnel are developing clarifying information to aid fire protection program managers to develop the plan for egress. The information will be included in the 241 Appendix.

When a nuclear plant is old or not needed anymore, it can be time to retire it. And we could say that decommissioning is like the retirement party for nuclear facilities.

Decommissioning jobs involve a clean-up crew, which usually ensures everything is safe and tidy. They deal with radioactive materials. Therefore, safety is the number one priority. The clean-up crew wears special gear to stay safe from the radioactive elements.

We could think of it like taking part in complicated machinery. Thus, the clean-up team took down the nuclear plant’s parts, ensuring nothing harmful could happen.

There can be waste from the old nuclear plant, and the clean-up crew manages it, ensuring it is stored safely and does not harm anyone.

Another area where the clean-up crew is involved is protecting the environment. These professionals ensure no harm to the air, water, or land around the retired nuclear plant.

Moreover, we have to mention that decommissioning also opens up new opportunities. So, after the clean-up, the land can be used for other things, like parks or new developments. The retired nuclear plant thus receives a new purpose.

Decommissioning projects often require interaction with local communities, involving communication about safety, progress, and environmental impact. A desire to be apart of a bigger picture may be an indicator for you to join the team that works in this field, take a look https://hukari.com/.

Cabel Breitenbach is an employee of HukariAscendent. He works as a Construction Engineer/Contract Technical Representative (CTR) at the OSWDF (On Site Waste Disposal Facility) at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, OH. He has worked on-site for 2 ½ years. Two years ago, he was given the opportunity to undertake the role of Safety Work Group Advocate at the OSWDF. The role of this position includes presenting monthly materials that target specific areas of safety and health, practices to improve in the workplace and at home, schedule and facilitate monthly Safety Work Group (SWG) meetings. He is responsible for recording meeting minutes and execute/assign action items for any safety issues that need to be resolved. In addition to his role as SWG Advocate, he attends Company Employee Safety Team (CEST) quarterly meetings with safety advocates throughout the plant site.

During his time as a SWG Advocate he has set a variety of goals to improve the safety and wellbeing of his fellow co-workers as well as the working environment. These goals include listening to any issues or concerns addressed in SWG meetings, diligently seeking a resolution to issues/concerns, presenting safety information in a way that sparks discussion and interaction among the attendees, and improving any unsafe work conditions found on the job site. Some of his accomplishments / improvements for a safer work environment have included; a damaged speed bump became a safety concern. He contacted the facility manager about the issue and working together with Northwind was able to procure and install a new speed bump. An automatic door was damaged which became a safety hazard when opening and closing. Cabel contacted the facility manager and with the cooperation of maintenance the issue was resolved.

Before Cabel took over the Safety Advocate role, attendance was running subpar for the SWG meetings; because he was able to make improvements, attendance now at the SWG meetings is in the ninety-fifth percentile. Cabel plans to continue acting as Safety Advocate for the OSWDF and keep making improvements at Ports to create a safer workplace for everyone.

HukariAscendent would like to thank and congratulate Cabel for his participation in the SWG Advocate program, a job well done. Always putting Safety First!

Nuclear power plants generate electricity, and ensuring that this process does not harm people is essential. Nuclear power jobs ensure everyone is safe both working in and near the plant.

At the same time, we have to say that nuclear accidents can have severe consequences for the environment. This is one good reason why nuclear power plant specialists usually ensure that everything runs smoothly to prevent unwanted incidents.

We need to state that nuclear power is a source of clean energy. And by ensuring the safety of nuclear plants, you can thus contribute to a sustainable future where we have access to reliable energy without causing harm to the environment.

At any rate, there are some strict regulations and guidelines to follow in the nuclear industry. Therefore, this job involves ensuring the plant operates within such rules to keep everything in check. Because safety in nuclear power is constantly evolving, if you decide to work in this field, you need to stay up-to-date with the latest safety measures and technologies. Thus, you can act like a detective and do your best to find new ways to make things safer.

A career in nuclear power plant safety is not only about having a stable, well-compensated job; it’s about being part of an industry vital to public health, environmental protection, and the sustainable energy future. It’s a field that requires dedication, continuous learning, and a commitment to upholding the highest safety standards.

The stability of nuclear engineer jobs is a crucial consideration for those entering or contemplating a career in this field. The factors that contribute to the stability of nuclear engineering jobs have to be thoroughly assessed if you want to gain the correct insights for long-term career security.

Nuclear engineering jobs are often influenced by the demand for nuclear power. Regions with a strong commitment to nuclear energy or those expanding their nuclear capabilities tend to have a stable demand for nuclear engineers. As such, it’s important to keep an eye on global and local trends in nuclear energy development to gauge potential job stability.

Government support and funding play a significant role in the stability of nuclear engineering jobs. Policies favoring nuclear energy, research, and development can create a stable job market. Be sure to stay informed about government initiatives and investments in the nuclear sector, as they directly impact job prospects.

Additionally, the evolution of nuclear technology contributes to job stability. Engineers who stay updated on the latest advancements and acquire skills in emerging technologies within the nuclear sector remain valuable assets to organizations driving innovation.

Beyond the advancement of nuclear technology and the construction of new facilities, job stability is also influenced by the frequency of maintenance and decommissioning projects. As existing plants age, there is a need for engineers specializing in maintenance, upgrades, and eventually decommissioning. This diversification of roles contributes to job stability over the long term.

Ultimately, investing in professional development and building a strong network within the nuclear industry can enhance job stability on an individual basis as well. Continuous learning, certifications, and active participation in industry events will greatly contribute to career resilience.
